It is well known that music has always had an overwhelming power over human emotions. Historically, it played a crucial role in building communities and uniting people, helping those of different ages and backgrounds become closer, be more understanding and accepting of one another.
In my opinion, the dominating emotional element inherent to music enables it to express ideas and deliver messages that are otherwise hard to put into words. As it not only introduces unfamiliar points of view and gives food for thought, but also evokes empathy in people for the experience of others.
For example, there are some albums and songs that represent the struggles of a specific period of time. By listening to them modern people can get a better understanding of the ages they didn’t witness. Music is able to provide a closer look into the life of our grandparents, inner turmoil of some historical figures, daily adversities of ancient tribes. With music being a universally understood language it prompts us to reflect on the past and helps to keep the conversation between the generations going.
Another point to consider is that while undoubtedly, music is a very powerful way of bringing people together, it cannot tackle all of the differences between distinct communities. Certainly it can serve as an ice breaker, giving a glimpse into the inner world of a person, allowing strangers to bond over similar emotional experiences.
