Our Review
The essay provides a basic summary of the data presented in the graph, but it struggles with grammatical accuracy and lacks a sophisticated analysis. The introduction is weak, and the overview is not clearly defined. We observe a need for improved sentence structure and a broader range of vocabulary to effectively describe the trends. The analysis focuses too much on individual activities without drawing insightful comparisons. To improve, the essay needs a clearer structure, better grammar, and a more nuanced interpretation of the data.

IELTS Essay Assessment
1. Topic Analysis:
- Topic Category: Line graph
- Key Requirements: Summarize the main features of the graph showing participation numbers in different activities at a Melbourne social centre from 2000 to 2020. Comparisons between activities are required.
- Coverage Assessment: The response attempts to address the topic but lacks a comprehensive overview and detailed comparison. It focuses on individual activities rather than presenting a holistic picture of the trends.
- Time Period: 2000-2020
- Data Type: Numerical
2. Structure Analysis:
- Introduction: The introduction is poorly written and grammatically incorrect ("The given graph illustrates the number of competitors took part..."). It does not clearly state the overall trend.
- Overview: The response lacks a clear and concise overview paragraph summarizing the main trends. The attempt at an overview in the second paragraph is fragmented and lacks focus.
- Body Paragraphs: The body paragraphs present information on each activity separately, lacking a structured comparison. The information is presented chronologically, but the comparisons are weak and not consistently applied.
- Logical Flow: The logical flow is weak. The information jumps between activities without a clear organizational structure.
- Paragraph Division: Paragraph division is inadequate. The essay needs better structuring to improve clarity and coherence.
3. Language Usage:
- Vocabulary Range: The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The writer uses "members" and "participants" interchangeably, and lacks precise vocabulary for describing trends (e.g., "substantial decline," "notable increase" are too general).
- Grammar Control: The grammar is weak throughout the essay. There are numerous grammatical errors, including incorrect tense usage, subject-verb agreement problems, and article misuse. Sentence structures are often clumsy and unclear.
- Tense Usage: Inconsistent tense usage (e.g., mixing past and present tenses).
- Sentence Variety: Lacks sentence variety, with many simple sentences.
- Article Usage: Incorrect use of articles (e.g., "the amount of competitors").
- Subject-Verb Agreement: Problems with subject-verb agreement (e.g., "the number of participants in theater were").
4. Detailed Band Scores:
- Task Achievement: 5/9. The response addresses the task but fails to provide a comprehensive summary and lacks detailed comparisons. The overview is missing.
- Coherence & Cohesion: 4/9. The information is presented in a disorganised manner. The lack of a clear overview and weak linking words significantly impact coherence.
- Lexical Resource: 4/9. Vocabulary is limited and repetitive. More precise language is needed to describe trends and make comparisons.
- Grammar: 4/9. Numerous grammatical errors affect the clarity and accuracy of the writing.
Overall Band: 4.5/9

- Overview Quality: Absent. A clear overview summarizing the main trends is crucial for a higher band score.
- Key Feature Coverage: The essay covers the data but lacks focus and misses the opportunity to highlight the most significant trends.
- Data Accuracy: Some numerical data is inaccurate or imprecise. The description of trends is often vague.
- Compare/Contrast: Comparisons are attempted but are weak and inconsistent. The writer needs to use more comparative language effectively.
6. Improvement Suggestions:
- Task Achievement Improvements: Write a clear overview paragraph summarizing the main trends. Focus on comparing and contrasting the participation rates of different activities. Highlight the most significant changes.
- Coherence Improvements: Use cohesive devices (e.g., linking words, phrases) to connect sentences and paragraphs logically. Organize the information thematically rather than chronologically.
- Vocabulary Improvements: Use more precise vocabulary to describe trends (e.g., "steep decline," "gradual increase," "remained relatively stable"). Use a wider range of comparative language (e.g., "in contrast," "similarly," "while").
- Grammar Improvements: Proofread carefully to correct grammatical errors. Focus on subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and article usage. Practice writing more complex sentences.
7. Model Essay:
(Corrected Version - A band 6-7 example)
The line graph illustrates the number of participants in five different activities at a Melbourne community centre between 2000 and 2020. Overall, while participation in amateur dramatics declined significantly, table tennis experienced a substantial increase. Film club and martial arts maintained relatively stable membership levels, whereas participation in musical performances showed a moderate increase.

However, by 2010, participation in both activities had converged around 25. Thereafter, amateur dramatics experienced a sharp decline, reaching only 5 participants by 2020, while table tennis participation rose steadily to approximately 55.
