Our Review
We've reviewed this IELTS Writing Task 1 sample focusing on its description of population trends. The essay successfully identifies the core task: to summarize and compare the population data for India and China. It accurately notes India's steeper growth trajectory and its projected future dominance. However, the analysis could be sharper. For instance, the initial figure of "1000 billions" is a critical factual error that severely undermines the credibility of the description; it should be corrected to "1 billion." Furthermore, while the essay attempts to use comparative language, the vocabulary could be more precise and academic. Phrases like "incline" and "stuck to" are less formal than preferred for IELTS Task 1. We also observed a need for more varied sentence structures to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control. Overall, this is a decent attempt at Task 1, but attention to numerical accuracy, precise vocabulary, and grammatical complexity is crucial for a higher band score.

The presented line graph enumerates in billions the number of populations between two different countries, namely India and China from 2000 along with their projections until the year of 2050. Overall, India had more significant increase in population rather than China. Moreover, it is estimated that India population will be more dominant than China until the years mentioned. Based on the figure, India started with only 1000 billions people in 2000, while China showed a little bit higher at around 1250. After a decade, there was an incline of India population by 100. It still consistently rose up and finally made the same number with China at around 1400 in 2030. In contrast, China had a moderate increase and it will be stuck to just over 1400 in 2030. Following this year, it is estimated that the number of Indian will still go up, reaching a peak in the next two decades with 1600, while China is predicted to fall to about 1300 in the final year.
IELTS Essay Assessment
1. IELTS Writing Score: 6/9 ■■■■■□□□
2. Score Breakdown:
-
Task Achievement: 6/9 - The essay addresses the task by describing the key features of the graph. However, the description lacks detail in places and the analysis is somewhat superficial. More precise numerical data should be included and a more in-depth comparison of the trends would improve the score. The final sentence ("India population will be more dominant than China") is a bit vague and could be more precise.
-
Coherence and Cohesion: 6/9 - The essay is organised logically with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is appropriate. However, the linking words and phrases could be more sophisticated and varied. The flow between sentences could be smoother in places.
-
Lexical Resource: 5/9 - The vocabulary is adequate but lacks range and precision. Words like "incline" and "stuck to" are not particularly academic or precise. More sophisticated synonyms and more precise numerical descriptions would improve this aspect. The phrase "1000 billions" is incorrect.
-
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: 6/9 - The grammar is generally accurate, but there are some minor errors (see below). The sentence structures are relatively simple and lack variety. More complex grammatical structures would enhance the score.
3. Error Analysis:
-
Vocabulary Errors:
- [
1000 billions] -> [ 1 billion ] : The original phrasing is nonsensical. Billions are already a large number; there is no need to multiply them by 1000. - [
incline] -> [ increase ] : "Increase" is a more formal and precise word. - [
stuck to] -> [ remained at/around ] : This phrase is informal; a more formal alternative is needed. - [
the number of Indian] -> [ the Indian population ] : Grammatically incorrect and imprecise.
- [
-
Grammar Errors:
- [
India had more significant increase in population rather than China.] -> [ India experienced a more significant increase in population than China.] : More concise and grammatically correct. - [
It still consistently rose up] -> [ It continued to rise steadily ] : More concise and avoids repetition.

4. English Model Essay:
The line graph illustrates the populations of India and China, in billions, from 2000 to 2050, including projected figures. Overall, while both countries experienced population growth, India's increase was considerably more substantial, resulting in India surpassing China's population by 2030 and maintaining a larger population throughout the projected period.
In 2000, China's population stood at approximately 1.25 billion, slightly exceeding India's 1 billion. Over the next decade, India's population rose by approximately 100 million, reaching roughly 1.1 billion in 2010. This upward trend continued, with India's population reaching parity with China's at around 1.4 billion in 2030. In contrast, China's population growth was more moderate, remaining at just over 1.4 billion in 2030. The projections indicate that India's population will continue to grow, peaking at approximately 1.6 billion in 2050, while China's population is predicted to decline to around 1.3 billion. This demonstrates a significant divergence in population trajectories between the two countries.
